Flow
Antti Kulmala

  • Location: Façade of Aboa Vetus Ars Nova, Itäinen Rantakatu 4–6
  • Time: 3–6 December 2026, 4–10 pm

On the banks of the River Aura, visitors become part of a stream of light.

Outside Aboa Vetus Ars Nova, Turku’s layers of history meet interactive light art. Antti Kulmala’s installation Flow changes shape in response to visitors. In the installation, glowing light responds to human movement, gathering, curving and dispersing. The glowing material forms a new, constantly changing world.

Flow explores the human figure as a fleeting form that is ultimately just one part of a larger whole: the same material forms both the figure and the surrounding world. The interaction between light and movement makes the connection between people and their environment visible. The installation asks: where does the individual end and the environment begin? The image created by the visitor’s presence alternately reforms, breaks apart and merges into the continuous flow of light.

Antti Kulmala is an award-winning artist born in Turku, known particularly for his installation, circus and light art. Kulmala’s works combine physical expression with technological innovation and often centre on community and human encounters. He explores light as a material that shapes space and transforms perception. His works have been exhibited in Finland and abroad, including at Path of Light and the GLOW Eindhoven festival in the Netherlands. More of Kulmala’s light art can be seen at an exhibition at Turku’s Old Town Hall from 23 November to 13 February.
